Defamation is an occupational hazard that journalists should
be especially careful to avoid. It is based on the fundamental
principle, recognised by most legal systems throughout the
world, that every person is entitled to his or her reputation.
Indeed, the right
to personal reputation is often given the same legal
protection as the right to personal property.
This course covers the ins and outs of
the law relating to defamation as well as other laws relevant
to the media such as copyright, contempt of court,
constitutional provisions, official secrecy, personal privacy,
parliamentary privileges, and self regulation.
